UNIT #1: CRITICAL READING
UNIT 1: LESSONS
LESSON 1.1
Helicopter Rescue: Conducting a 'Critical' Reading (or, reading between the lines) To begin exploring critical reading, we are going to take a helicopter flight over an unexplored island....a trip that will cause us to face difficult choices...and make decisions based on how well we "read" the situation. |

LESSON 1.2
At First Glance & "A date to the movies?": Making inferences & drawing conclusions Making inferences has a lot to do with using our background knowledge and combining it with information we just learned. However, our brains can trick us by having "tunnel vision"--or trapping us into seeing one possibility when, in reality, several possibilities exist. This activity will challenge your original beliefs about reading and thinking by forcing you to make inferences that you draw multiple, valid conclusions. By the end, you will come to see what truly is involved with critical reading--and it will likely blow your mind what is "in" a mere 4-sentence passage of easy words. LESSON 1.4
Concrete Poetry: Applying Critical Reading Skills to Develop an Analysis
Concrete Poetry: Applying Critical Reading Skills to Develop an Analysis
The final lesson of the unit will have us analyze multiple concrete poems to develop a formal analysis. Concrete poetry is poetry that takes a shape that is indicative of its meaning. In other words, the way the poem appears on the page (in addition to the words used) means something! So not only must you pay attention to what is being said (and what isn't) but also to why it looks the way it does!
After lots of practice, you will prepare for an in-class in which you develop a formal analysis for a concrete poem. VOCABULARY: analysis, textual evidence, direct quotes, lead-in phase, parenthetical citation |
